| What is Pilates and how can it help me?
Pilates encompassed training the muscles of your “girdle of strength”
or the abdominal, buttocks, hips and low back muscles. By training
these “core” muscles, you achieve strength and balance to your whole
system of muscles. Pilates encourages full range of motion movements
that increase not only strength but also flexibility as well as
quality of movement. Many injuries occur because an individual has
lost efficiency in how they move. By performing the precise movements
of Pilates, we can re-pattern how we move and be rid of our bad
movement habits.
In addition, Pilates encourages the growth of long, lean, strong
muscles, which not only make our daily tasks easier but also increase
our metabolism. Pilates can help you reshape, fine tune, and achieve
a balanced body with a balanced mind!
Who can benefit?
All age and fitness levels benefit from Pilates but remember..as
with any form of exercise, if you have been inactive for several
years, have an existing disease/injury or have recently been treated
for any injury, you should consult your physician before beginning.
There are many levels of proficiency to Pilates and each participant
will work at the level which best accommodates their needs and goals.
What equipment is used or needed?
Pilates Reformer Classes are performed on a machine called a Reformer,
which uses springs as resistance. All equipment is provided by Contemporary
Pilates but class size is limited.
Where should I begin?
We require each new Pilates participant to take a minimum of one
individual session with a trainer before they begin a reformer class.
Reformer classes consist of up to 5 people in a class. If you have
previous Pilates experience, you may be screened by a trainer to
enter a Reformer class.
